It is not easy to find a direct economic explanation of the behaviour of the people who now rule the world. The desire for pure power seems to be much more dominant than the desire for wealth. This has often been pointed out, but curiously enough the desire for power seems to be taken for granted as a natural instinct, equally prevalent in all ages likes the desire for food. Actually it is no more natural, in the sense of being biologically necessary, than drunkenness or gambling. And if it has reached new levels of lunacy in our own age, as I think it has, then the question becomes: what is the special quality in modern life that makes a major human motive out of the impulse to bully others?

Was Orwell ever....a celebrity journalist?
Would one have said or thought that about him at the time...perhaps in different terms, thinking from within the sensibilities of Orwell's peers?
I don't know.
A stand you take in alliance with other people...and by this I mean other people who are real...and not "abstract"....a stand like the one Cindy Sheehan is taking. A political stand....is inherently different from taking a stand as a "figurehead"...as a "known journalist."
Simply put, Hitchens is accountable to no one but himself and his career. Whatever abuse and criticism we heap on him only serves to define the outlines of his silhouette in starker and clearer terms.
He might bully today and beg forgiveness tommorrow. We can't know.
What is his stand point? It's Christopher Hitchens. The man. The career.
That was not, using similar terms, Orwell's stand point. And, of course, what makes this clear...is that while it is entirely possible to imagine a way in which George Orwell might have been critical of Cindy Sheehan.
It is also clear that Orwell's hypothetical critique wouldn't, as Hitchens' logic inevitably leads, have been directed only back at himself.
Where does Hitchens want to take the world? Who does he ally himself with? There really are no good answers to these questions. He could be writing from any point of view...from any side of history.
Today, putting Orwell to the side, I think the more relevant question is...how, fundamentally, do people view Cindy Sheehan's actions?
Where does she want to take the world? And does the American public, on some level, endorse her actions...and support those who've joined her in speaking out against George Bush?
She is, at the end of the day, simply asking questions of the powerful.
Why bully her? What's at stake?
